Why I took a gap year at 18 and what happened next

3 minute read

Everyone had an opinion.

Parents said risk. Teachers said mistake. Friends said at least you'll have fun.

None of them were completely wrong.

I took the gap year because I had things I genuinely wanted to build. Syphon existed as an idea. Rey was mid-compiler. Neural Nexus needed direction. firstDraft had momentum. I could feel the window closing.

JEE would've consumed everything for two years if I let it.

So I made a deal with myself: one year. full send.

What actually happened surprised me. I shipped more in three months than I had in the previous year combined. Not because I suddenly became more disciplined, but because I stopped treating building like a side hobby.

The hardest part wasn't workload. It was the lack of structure.

No school schedule. No forced social interaction. No external validation loop.

You have to build those systems yourself.

Obsidian became my second brain. Daily prayers kept me grounded. The gym kept me sane.

I'm still preparing for JEE 2027. That didn't disappear. But now both tracks feel intentional instead of accidental.
